There has been a super little flurry of small drinks companies harking back to ye-good-olde days of traditional sodas, answering that need of folk really yearning for soft drinks with substance, with realness and with provenance. Square Root London are delivering this in bucket loads.
Fizzed up by Ed and Robyn in their small kitchen in Hackney back in 2012 where they began by making Ginger Beer and selling at their local farmers market in Harringay, gaining them an eager following very quickly, thirsty for more.
Each week the couple created more and more flavours, deciding it was time to bring in some extra help to deal with the demand, this is when they introduced 'Elsie' their 1920's delivery tricycle, that they converted in a mobile bar and peddling their sodas around London! After an incredibly busy summer the natural progression was to start bottling their sodas and start selling their most popular flavours through local outlets.
As demand kept growing, in late 2013 they founded the Square Root Soda Works, their very own production and bottling space, based out of a railway arch in Hackney Downs, were they have continued to grow and develop their soda range into a core range of Cola, Ginger Beer, Lemonade and Root Beer, a fantastic range of tonic waters including herbal Artemisia and Hop and an Indian Cinchona and a gorgeous selection of seasonal and ever-changing sodas, such as their current Summer range of Cucumber, Elderflower, Rhubarb and Strawberry sodas. Which all sound amazing as pure sodas, but then use them as mixers with your favourite tipple and holy moly! Life. Made.
Also, loving the sound of their special release - a Cascara Club made in collaboration with Climpsons & Sons. This has got to make a brilliant variation on the Espresso Martini, hmmm...
You'll be very pleased to know that all of their sodas are made using fresh ingredients, juiced or infused by hand, and all contain around a third less sugar than your average bottle of fizzy pop! The sugars that are added are all either made from sugar beet grown on British farms, or ethically sourced, fairly traded cane sugars produced at source by farmers in Mauritius.
Priding themselves as masters of soda flavours with a devotion to the ethical production of pop, their efforts were recognised when they won the 2015 BBC Food & Farming Awards for ‘Best Drinks Producer’ – the first soft drinks company to ever even make it in to the final, let alone win this prestigious award!
Square Root Soda can be found at cafes and bars of good repute or you can order your own case of soda online from their online store.
